VoIP versus traditional phone systems
The platform decision matters far less than the network underneath it. Almost every call quality problem we investigate is a network issue rather than a phone system issue, which is why voice and network belong with the same team rather than with two vendors pointing at each other.

Why calls sound bad
Five causes cover the overwhelming majority of quality complaints.
- No quality of service configuration, so a large upload competes with a call
- Insufficient upstream bandwidth, common on older business connections
- Wireless handsets roaming badly between access points
- A firewall inspecting voice traffic it should be passing through
- Double NAT from an unmanaged router left in the path
The obligations people miss
With a traditional line, the network knows where the handset is. With voice over internet it could be anywhere, so the registered address has to be maintained deliberately and updated when people move desks or work from home.
There are federal requirements around emergency calling, including the ability to dial emergency services directly without an access code and to notify a central point when someone does. These are obligations rather than optional features.
The other commonly missed detail is porting. Numbers take two to four weeks to move and the old service must stay active until the port completes, because a released number can be extremely difficult to recover.

Is VoIP reliable enough for a business that depends on the phone?
On a properly configured network, yes, and it has been for years. Where reliability is genuinely critical, the answer is redundant connectivity rather than staying on traditional lines, since a secondary circuit or cellular failover addresses the actual dependency.
Should we use Microsoft Teams as our phone system?
It suits businesses already living in Teams with straightforward call handling. It is weaker where you need sophisticated call queues, contact centre features or deep integration with an industry specific system. Check the licensing carefully, because calling is an addition to most standard tiers rather than something already included.
What happens to our numbers?
They port, and the process is well established. Allow two to four weeks and never cancel the old service before the port confirms. That single mistake is the one genuinely dangerous step in an otherwise routine migration.
