On-premises server versus cloud
Cloud is not automatically cheaper, and any provider claiming otherwise has not run the numbers. What it reliably buys is resilience, remote access and an end to replacing hardware every five years. For some workloads that trade is clearly worth it. For others it is not.
Comparing honestly

What should usually stay local
Five categories where on premises remains the better answer more often than not.
- Manufacturing and machine control systems, where latency and vendor support rule cloud out
- Imaging or diagnostic equipment requiring local hardware connections
- Applications the vendor only supports on premises, which is still common
- Very large datasets where egress charges would dominate the running cost
- Sites with poor or unreliable connectivity, where cloud makes an outage total
Hybrid is a destination, not a compromise
Most businesses of this size end up with some workloads in cloud and some local, connected so users do not notice the boundary.
That is frequently described as a halfway house by people selling a full migration. It is not. It is the rational outcome of assessing each workload on its own merits rather than applying one decision to everything.
The practical test for each system is simple: does moving it improve resilience or access enough to justify the running cost, and does anything physical tie it to the building? Answer that per workload and the architecture designs itself.

Our server is five years old. Should we replace it or move to cloud?
That decision point is the right moment to ask, because you are about to spend capital either way. Cost the replacement including hardware, licences, installation and the five year support burden, then cost the cloud equivalent over the same period including egress and licensing. Often the numbers are closer than expected and resilience becomes the deciding factor rather than price.
Is cloud more secure than our own server?
The infrastructure usually is, because the provider invests more than any small business can. Your configuration of it is a separate question and is where incidents actually occur. A badly configured cloud environment is less secure than a well managed local server, which is why the shared responsibility model matters more than the platform choice.
What about internet dependency?
It is a real consideration and the honest counterweight to most cloud arguments. A business moving everything to cloud makes its internet connection a single point of failure for the entire operation. Where that matters, a secondary circuit on a genuinely different physical path is part of the migration cost rather than an optional extra.
